Chania to Elafonisi by Car: Route, Driving Time and Parking

by | 20 Aug, 2026 | Day Trips from Chania

The drive from Chania to Elafonisi takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on your exact starting point and traffic conditions. The distance from Chania town is roughly 75–80 km, so it is best planned as a day trip. You can reach the parking areas by car via the main paved road. From there, you continue on foot to the beach, as driving onto the sand is not permitted.

Which route should you take from Chania?

Start by heading west along the main north coast road towards Kissamos. At Kaloudiana, turn inland and follow the signs for Elafonisi. The route continues towards Elos and Chrysoskalitissa before reaching the beach area.

There is a significant change compared to older travel guides, as the Topolia bypass opened in July 2025. The old road which passed through the gorge and the narrow tunnel is no longer the only option for this section of the journey. Check the route on your GPS before setting off. If you set the village of Topolia or the Cave of Agia Sofia as a specific stop, the directions might guide you along the old road.

There is also a route along the western side of Crete that passes through villages such as Sfinari and Kampos. You might choose this option if the drive itself is part of your plans. Keep in mind, however, that the inland route is the fastest option.

Is the drive difficult?

Part of the route involves winding roads, changes in elevation, and sections where you need to slow down when passing through villages. Distance alone is not enough to estimate the total travel time.

A standard car is perfectly suitable; there is no need to rent a large SUV just to get to Elafonisi. What matters most is having enough space for your group and choosing a car you feel comfortable driving.

For example, a couple traveling with just a small beach bag has different needs than a family carrying a stroller and plenty of luggage. You can compare available rental cars before making your choice. Check your planned route on the GPS before setting off and verify your fuel level. Drive leisurely through the winding sections of the road and of course, make stops to take photos.

Where can you park at Elafonisi?

Leave your car in one of the designated parking areas before the beach’s protected zone and walk the rest of the way. Vehicle access to the protected area is restricted; you should not drive down to park right next to the beach.

There are several private parking lots along the road to the beach. Before entering, consider both the location and the price. The walking distance to the beach depends on where you park.

Pack your essentials in a bag that is comfortable to carry. Water, towels, and beach gear can become cumbersome if each person is carrying multiple separate items.

When should you set off, and where should you stop?

If you are traveling in July or August, departing from Chania around 08:00 gives you a good chance of reaching the beach before the peak crowds arrive. Allow extra time for traffic, parking and the walk to the beach.

Elafonisi gets very crowded during these months! While arriving early helps, there is still no guarantee the beach won’t be busy. Drive there in the morning, spend a few hours swimming and relaxing and leave enough time for lunch and the return journey.

Chrysoskalitissa Monastery is a potential stop near Elafonisi. It is situated on a cliff overlooking the sea. If you wish to visit the interior, check the opening hours before including it in your itinerary.

You can also stop in Elos for a meal or coffee if you are taking the inland route. Choose a stop you genuinely want to make, rather than trying to visit too many villages and beaches in a single day.

What should you take with you to the beach?

Bring water, a snack, sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable shoes for the walk from the car. Make sure your mobile phone is charged and save your parking location before heading down to the beach.

Check the weather forecast for wind and temperature at Elafonisi. A forecast of sunshine alone is not enough to know what conditions to expect at the beach.

Elafonisi is famous for its shallow lagoon and pink sand. This color comes from tiny shell fragments mixed in with the sand. The area is also protected under the Natura 2000 network, so please leave the sand and shells where they are and avoid approaching the fenced off sand dunes and vegetation.

Finally, take your trash with you when you leave and make sure you have gathered all your belongings before heading back to the car.
